Panelist included Bobbi Kurshan, Brian McNulty, and Stephanie Takai. Bobbi was the former Executive Director of Curriki, an online educational community that offers free, open-source K12 instructional materials.  Brian is Vice President at the Leadership and Learning Center, while Stephanie was the former CIO of Goodyear and has a background in corporate management in IT and marketing. Paul Pendleton of Finding Leaders facilitated the panel discussion.

Topics discussed by the panel ranged from technology restraints and budget cut.  The audience then had a chance to ask questions ranging from technology in the classroom to teacher practice.    One administrator noted, “I could have listened to the panel for another hour!”

“The problem we are facing is that we have 106 courtrooms across the county.  The datacenter provides us with an electronic copy of the daily dockets. We print them out, sort them for the individual areas, highlight sections manually and scotch tape the paper behind glass doors outside each of the courtrooms and elevator entrance/exits.  This happens every day of the week, on every floor across the county.  It takes anywhere from 1 to 2 hours, per person, per day which is resulting is a waste of resources and money.”

Mr. Anand “Bill” Julka, the founder and president of Cleveland’s Smart Solutions, Inc. visited Beijing, China on December 27 and 28, 2010 to pursue goals in both education and business. Mr. Julka serves on the Board of Directors of the Cleveland State University Foundation, and met with Dr. Jiaqiong Wang, President of Capital University of Economics and Business (CUEB) in Beijing to discuss CUEB’s partnership with Cleveland State University (CSU) and possibilities for promoting greater understanding between U.S. and China, as well as means for promoting greater use of the English language in China and the Chinese language in the United States. Mr. Julka also discussed potential e-commerce collaborations with Chinese counterparts.

Mr. Julka was accompanied in these meetings by Dr. Lih-Ching Chen Wang, founding Director of the Confucius Institute at CSU. The dignitaries present included Dr. Liwei Dong, Professor of accounting and Dean of the College of International Cultural Exchange of CUEB; Mr. Xing Fu, Founding Director of Educational Technology Center of CUEB; Ms. Xuhong Zhang, Associate Professor in English language and International Relationships and Vice Dean of the College of International Cultural Exchange of CUEB; Dr. Jihua Song, Professor in the College of Information Science and Technology at Beijing Normal University and one of creators of the “Great Wall Chinese” instructional software distributed globally by Hanban (i.e., The Office of Chinese Language Council International).

Mr. Julka’s successful visit to China fits beautifully with the goals of the Confucius Institute at CSU, which include supporting business exchanges between NE Ohio and China as well as promoting Chinese culture and language in NE Ohio.
